Due to illness, soloist Gigi Mitchell-Velasco is unable to appear in the WVSO's November 14 – 15, 2008 performances of Gustav Mahler’s vivid Third Symphony. Mezzo-soprano Stacey Rishoi replaces Velasco and performs in this musical journey of epic proportions.
A winner of the 1999 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Rishoi has garnered an international reputation for the beauty and power of her instrument. In her recent debut as Adalgisa in Norma the Washington Post stated, "It was Rishoi's Adalgisa, however, who nearly stole the show with a performance that was convincing and unwavering from start to finish. In her company debut, Rishoi commanded the stage with a lustrous voice graced with natural expression and a surprising clarion projection."
Even if you don't admire Mahler's music, I challenge you to join me as I experience his passionate Third Symphony for the first time. I'm sure we'll find the experience rewarding, and we will likely even enjoy it! I am certainly excited to hear critically acclaimed Rishoi.
"The most notable triumph came from mezzo-soprano Stacey Rishoi as Amneris.... Rishoi set an aggressive tone early on during her character's confrontational duet with Aida and stayed fully engaged in the Act IV aria in which she decides to spare the life of Radames. Rishoi's transformation was a joy to watch." [AIDA - Orlando Opera Company]
— Tampa Tribune
"The most outstanding performance ... was given by mezzo-soprano Stacey Rishoi, with a warm, tonally secure, emotionally expressive voice and a dramatic stage presence that were just right for the role of Sesto." [LA CLEMENZA DI TITO - Wolf Trap Opera]
— Washington Post
